Krutz Family Cellars is a producer of handcrafted wines. Our boutiquewinery produces a Napa Valley “Stagecoach Vineyard” Cabernt,Sauvignon, a Santa Lucia Highlands “Sleepy Hollow” Chardonnay and an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. In 2003 Krutz Family Cellars was born. Weighing in at about 60 cases total between three separate varietals (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and a Grenache/Syrah blend) Boutique or Small doesn’t even come close to describing production. Microscopic would be more accurate. That was some of the most fun I’ve ever had…at work too! I thought, “Damn, if I can have this much fun at work, I’m in!” In 2004 I produced 170 cases total (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon) and for 05, which is the current release, a total of 450 cases, and in barrel for 06 I have about 900 cases. I am growing as the demand for Krutz Family Cellars is growing. Still, at this level, I would say that it is microscopic production as compared to other wineries’ production.

To make wines of varietal character, vineyard character, and do so in small lots from single vineyards is what I envisioned in 2003 and still hold foremost now. To be able to know what each and every barrel is up to at all times is also something that I hold of the utmost importance. It is for this reason that I hope to max out at somewhere around 1,500-2,000 cases of total production within the next couple years and re-evaluate keeping the founding principals in mind.

Finally, wine is about sharing with family and friends alike. It is for this reason I filed the DBA as “Krutz Family Cellars”. Anyone who has a glass or bottle is now a part of the extended Krutz Family. I hope you enjoy tasting as much as I did in crafting.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
