Located in beautiful Chautauqua County, Johnson Estate is home to almost 30 different wines including two delicious Icewines, Port and Cream Sherry. The history of the Johnson Estate Winery begins with Frederick Johnson (1877-1960) who in 1908 purchased the family home (built in 1822) and farm along the banks of Freelings Creek. The farm consisted of several orchards of apples, cherries and peaches along with a number of vineyards, predominately Concord, which Mr. Johnson marketed through the Sunnyslope Fruit Farm. Johnson family lore credits Mr. Johnson with the unofficial start of the winery during Prohibition, when he made wine from his homegrown grapes. His son, Frederick Spencer Johnson (1921-1998), grew up on the farm and later graduated from Cornell University in 1946 after distinguished military service as a naval aviator. In 1960, he returned home and began planting French-American hybrid grapes; the winery was officially founded in 1961. Mr. Johnson's children have added Vinifera vineyards and Icewines and are proud to continue the farming and winemaking tradition of their family. The winery officially began production in 1961 which makes it the oldest family-owned estate winery in New York. The "estate" label is an important one. As an estate winery, the entire winemaking process takes place on the Johnson Estate property. In addition to the extreme attention and care this provides the winery, it also allows the grapes to be picked at their optimal moment of readiness and to be brought into the winemaking process before any unwanted deterioration can occur. Like all aspects of winemaking at Johnson Estate, this advantage makes itself known in every bottle.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
