Bill and Mui Stowe, along with their kids, will, Greg and Tammy, planted 21 acres to Riesling, Chardonnay,& Pinot Noir. Some Riesling was pulled in the early 1990's and in about 1998, Pinot Clones 777,513,515 were added to complement the original Pinot Clones (2A, Clevener Marifeld and Gamay Beaujolais), as well as some Syrah. Currently, there are fifteen acres in the vineyard.
The Stowe Vineyard is at 44 degrees latitude, elevation 2,626 feet. Growing seasons are ideal-long, sunny and warm (Average 82 degrees). During the growing season, there is literally on precipitation and nights are cool (average 52 degrees). The soil is silty loam, generously mixed with limestone. The soils lie on cracked lava, thus there is great drainage.
Winters and frost have had some impact. Vintages 86,89 and 91 wew lost to extreme winter cold; winters since 91 have been generally mild. We've seen some minor frost damage in each of the springs since 1999, generally damaging only the young vines. Pinot Clones and the Syrah...finally.
We sell small quantity of fruit to home winemakers each year (grapes, crushed grapes, juice). We also purchase Malbec, Cab Sauvigon, and Merlot from the reknowned Woodriver Vineyards, whose wine growing standards equal those of the Stowe Vineyards.

Red, White & Drunk all over by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean writes about wine with a sensuous obsession... and often laugh-out-loud funny... Terrific.

Ms. MacLean is the disarming Everywoman. She loves wine, loves drinking ... ultimately, it's a winning formula.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a fiesty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
