In 1992, Max Lloyd, a high-tech entrepreneur fell in love with fine wine while in Sonoma on business. His father and both grandfathers had made homemade wine and his family had always been into gardening and cooking, but this was his first experience with world-class European-style wine.

The following April, in 1993, Max planted 220 Cabernet Sauvignon vines on some family land near Smith Mountain, Virgina and began growing commercial wine grapes part-time. Over the years, additional land was acquired and additional vineyards were planted.

In 2001 the decision was made to start a winery and after searching dozens of pieces of land, the Grove farm was purchased. Grapes were originally planted on the estate vineyards on April 6, 2002. Grove Winery, LLC was bonded by the Federal Government on 9/3/2004. In the fall of 2006, the 2005 Grove Estate Merlot won Grove's first Gold Medal.

In 2002, Dick Castens came on board as Vineyard Manager. Dick now has more than a decade of experience managing multiple vinifera vineyards year-round.

In May of 2006, John Gladstone, a sommelier who had earned his wine chops in Southern California and his marketing degree from UNCG joined the Grove Team as General Manager.

Today
Grove is now recognized as one of the most awarded wineries on the East Coast. All grapes are hand harvested and used for a limited production of about 3000 cases of premium wine each year.

A short drive from anywhere in the Triad or Triangle, our tasting room is located at the winery and is open year-round for tastings, shopping, picnics, special events or simply a glass of wine on our patio overlooking Lake Cabernet. We offer short guided tours of our production facilities upon request at no charge. Self-guided vineyard tours are also available.

Red, White & Drunk all over by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean writes about wine with a sensuous obsession... and often laugh-out-loud funny... Terrific.

Rex Pickett, Sideways

Ms. MacLean is the disarming Everywoman. She loves wine, loves drinking ... ultimately, it's a winning formula.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
