We started out as Dry Stack Cellars. The name came from the dry stack rock walls we made around the property from the huge amount of rock we removed from the vineyard during development. Dry Stack refers to a rock wall made by stacking the rocks 'dry' - without any cement or mortar.
In 2007, after our first release of Rosemary's Block Sauvignon Blanc got a HUGE review from Robert Parker, Dry Sack Sherry came after us claiming the names were too similar and would cause confusion. So we changed the name to Grey Stack since the rocks in the wall were primarily grey basalt.
In late 2008 we took a look at our growing business and realized that it was time to take our fledgling winery more seriously. So over the winter of 2008-2009 we made a series of changes to our operation. We.
Hired Pat Sullivan and Randall Watkins as our winemakers
Moved to Copain Custom Crush
Took a course in Wine Entrepenurship at Sonoma State
Engaged professionals with expertise in PR, marketing and accounting
and I spent the year writing a business plan and developing financial forecasts.
At the end of 2009 we crushed our first grapes at Copain with Pat and Randall at the helm and, recognizing we needed some help, we convinced Brian and Paula and Nate to join our new board of directors.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
