In 1952, Ben Volkhardt Sr., a San Franciscan sheet metal worker, decided to purchase farming land outside of the big city. He decided on an 80 acre fruit orchard filled with peach and pear trees accompanied by a four acre vineyard of Alicante Bouschet grapes. Quickly realizing the higher margins in the grape industry, the orchard was slowly replanted over the next 20 years and a quaint family winery, Volkhardt Family Vineyards, was created. Grapes have remained the bountiful crop from that time forward. The land stayed in the family for three generations spanning over 50 years. Eventually after years of bountiful winemaking, the Volkhardt family grew tired of winemaking and wanted to simplify their lives. In May 2005, Green Valley Vintners, LLC acquired the winery and vineyards.

Green Valley Vintners, LLC is a partnership representing four owners. Two of the four owners, Earl and Randy Mork, do like to grab fists full of land as they have worked side by side, for over 30 years, as residential and commercial landscaping contractors. They know a thing or two about irrigation, plant health, viticulture, and vineyard management. Our finances, accounting, and operations side of the winery is handled by our executive guru, Lark Welton. Accuracy and organizational expertise are her forte . And last but not least, there’s our savvy entrepreneur, Robert Hager. With his acute business sense, passion to own land and dream to own a winery, he brought it all together and that was the beginnings of Green Valley Vintners, LLC.

The future goal and direction of Green Valley Vintners, LLC is to maximize all aspects of the business:

...Maximize fruit quality and yield for the six planted varietals of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Dolcetto, and Cabernet Franc.

... Develop a collection of high quality yet moderately priced wines including, but not limited to, such varietals as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Dolcetto and Sangiovese. Our current offerings also include several blends and variations of these grapes, including Merlot Blanc, Merlot Rose, Silhouette, and our soon to be released, Reserve 2005 Portrait.

...Offer friendly and enjoyable tastings in our Tasting and Sales Room, educational tours of the cellar, walks through the picture perfect vineyards and picnics on our deck.

...Develop an awareness of the Solano County Green Valley American Viticulture Area. This area is the best kept secret in California. Its rich soil, temperate climate, warm breezes, and picture- perfect views combine to create paradise.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
