FORT SELDEN WINERY finally opened its tasting room for the public on April 1, 2012.It was a soft opening with only family and close friends. No advertising was done for the opening; we still needed time to familiarize with the commercial equipment (electronic cash register, credit card machine, fast internet) And we needed to bottle some more wines or we would risk, to run out of wines during the first days.

Some friends did come. Dick and Susan Marsden handed over a poster with a inscribed plaque, to the proprietors Desiree and Franklin Simon. The poster now decorates the tasting room.

In the vineyard we grow different grapevines, among which Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese.

Malbec vines have been planted first in 2009 and were still too young to produce wines. Some whites are available, such as Gewurztraminer. Another white grape variety, which still has not produced wines, is Rkatsiteli.

This variety, which is very popular in Eastern Europe, seems to thrive in the warm climate of Southern New Mexico.

The taste of Rkatsiteli is something of a blend of Gewurztraminer and Riesling. Our experience with this variety seems to indicate, that they are much better adapted to the very warm summers from southern New Mexico, than both the Gewurztraminer and Riesling.

The Cabernets and Shiraz grapes are the oldest vines in our vineyard and have been planted as soon as the property had been cleared from the original mesquite bushes and had been leveled.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
