The vines of Colter's Creek are nestled along the Potlatch river near it's confluence with the Clearwater. The elevation of the vineyard is between 800 and 1200ft., making it one of the lowest elevation vineyards in Idaho. The steep, south facing slopes of the river canyon coupled with the cooling effect from the river makes this a perfect site for growing grapes.
The 5-acre Spencer Block, consisting of Chardonnay, Riesling, and Rkatsiteli, was planted in 1986. In 1997, a new owner established the Komze Block, 3 acres of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. In 2002 the vineyard was again sold and remained untouched for the next 5 years.
In the winter of 2007 we bought the deserted vineyard. Surprisingly most of the vines survived years of neglect due to a hearty root system and sufficient annual rainfall. Over the next 2 years we re-trellised and retrained the vines and added a new drip-irrigation system. In the spring of 2009, we planted 3 more acres, comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Gewurztraminer, Grenache, Viognier as well as test plots of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. Nearly 25 years after it's birth, the vineyard is now healthy and thriving.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
