If you like Barolo, try this one as it's also made from the Nebbiolo grape. This rustic, robust Italian red wine is monstrously tannic with tarry black fruit, so it needs cellar time. Decant 2 hours. Try it with a rack of lamb.

Food pairings: beef, mushroom risotto, gorgonzola.

Reviews and Ratings

Wineboy rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

All the classic Nebbiolo aromas I love (roses, tar, licorice), classic structure (high acid, high tannins), medium power, more floral on the palate than the nose. Give this one a bit of time in the cellar and I promise it will reward you. 3-5 years.
Greg Hughes rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Piemontese Nebbiolo (or Spanna) is grown in many interesting terroirs in Piemonte. In the northern climes of the area (Biella, Novara, and Vercelli) glacial and volcanic soils give us firm concentrated wines to cellar and savour.
Dark at the core amd pale ruby at the brim, it's very representative of Gattinara; floral, extremely firm, and at thsi stage quite young. Lots of leather, pressed flowers, strawberries, cherry, and dried herbs.
The flavours are pure and delicious. Tons of freshness and acidity. If you wanted to taste a wine built for the cellar; ta-dah!
The area rests on the footsteps of a dead volcano that exploded eons ago, scattering rich soils all over Gattinara and nearby Bramaterra (their westerly neighbours).
Needs a long decant, but would go great with risotto; one of the regional specialties. You can actually visit rice patties when you visit. Such a beautiful area.
Travaglini Gattinara 2013 is a full-bodied, elegant Barolo from the Piedmont wine region. The Nebbiolo wine grapes for this wine were sourced from vines of 12 to 45 years of age. The wine spend 30 months in oak prior to bottling. Look for dried florals on the nose with ripe red fruit, dried fruit, cake and savoury spice flavours on the palate. Very approachable now, this Barolo can easily cellar for another 10 years. Pair with grilled meats or a rich game dishes. - Community Wine Reviews
