Lovely nose on this Mazzei Ser Lapo 2015 of ripe red and dark berries, earthy florals and dried herbs. This is a 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tuscany wine region aged one year in French oak barriques (50% new). On the palate, there are wild strawberries, ripe raspberry, red berry and dried herb flavours. Long red berry and spicy finish. Tannins are structured with great acidity for food. Pair with a rich meaty pasta and a richer tomato sauce.

Chianti Classico food pairings: ravioli, beef stew, pizza, pork chops.

Reviews and Ratings

Linda Mertes WSET 2 rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

A fine Chianti blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. Aromas of red fruit-ripe strawberry and sour cherry. A medium-bodied dry wine with notes of Italian herbs. Decanting required to filter sediment and a 2-hour aeration is advised. Dried fruit and earthiness from oak aging. Pair with pastas in a hearty meal sauce, beef or lamb stews, and medium cheeses. A novelty wine label, secured with a wax seal, peels away to a Renaissance illustration inside.
Mazzei Ser Lapo 2015 is a full-bodied 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tuscany wine region. Lovely nose of ripe red and dark berries, earthy florals and dried herbs. Rich red berry, dark plum, savoury spice and dried herb flavours on the palate finishing with a veil of smoky vanilla. The wine was aged one year in French oak barriques (50% new). Tannins are structured and there is great acidity for food. Pair with meaty game stews in a rich gravy. The Mazzei family have been the owners of this Italian winery, Castello di Fonterutoli, since 1435 with the first vintage of this Riserva made in 1983. - Community Wine Reviews
