Martinez Lacuesta Hinia Reserva from Rioja is a distinguished, full-bodied blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo sourced from vines averaging over 40 years of age, from a producer whose winemaking heritage stretches back to 1895, lending this wine a depth of tradition and expertise that is immediately apparent in every sip. Brick-tinged garnet in the glass with an evolving rim that speaks to its graceful age, it opens with a complex and inviting nose of dried rose petal, dark molasses and a suggestion of forest undergrowth, shifting into flavours of sun-dried fig, smoked clove and a haunting ribbon of earthy mushroom on the palate, all framed by silky, well-integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the finish remarkably fresh and long. It is bone dry and best served at room temperature, drinking beautifully now and rewarding further cellaring through 2030. The 2014 vintage in Rioja is widely regarded as one of the finest of the decade, producing wines of exceptional concentration and balance that are now entering their most pleasurable drinking window after years of quiet evolution in bottle. Serve it with a thick-cut grilled ribeye finished with sea salt and chimichurri, where the wine's silky depth and earthy complexity will stand up magnificently to the bold, charred flavours of the meat, or pair it with a venison ragù slow-cooked with red wine and juniper berries, letting its dark fruit and smoked clove undertones weave beautifully into the richness of the dish.

Food pairings: steaks from the grill, venison rage, meat-lover's pizza.
