Wine of an intense red colour with garnet-coloured hints. To the nose fruity sensations of blackberry and black cherry, notes of basil and sweet spices due to the refinement in oak barrels. In the mouth it is smooth and balanced with a strong but never intrusive tannin. Long last finish. (jamessuckling.com,Sept. 6, 2022) MINE: Leone de Castris Riserva 2019 is an excellent value full-bodied Negroamaro from the Puglia wine region at $23. So fragrant and juicy, this is a robust red with rich dark cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate and flinty mineral flavours vibrant and lingering on the palate with cocoa powder tannins. An outstanding Negroamaro to drink through 2028. NEW: This Negroamaro Riserva punches well above its price. The nose shows dark cherry and blackberry, dusted with cocoa powder and a flinty mineral edge. The tannins are firm but never harsh, and the finish runs long. Negroamaro doesn't get the attention Puglia's other reds do, and bottles like this make that feel like an oversight. Serve it with barbecued meats or a block of aged cheese.

Negroamaro food pairings: barbecued meats and mushrooms, hard cheese.
