Gérard Bertrand Picpoul de Pinet from the Languedoc is a medium-light 100% Picpoul Blanc, a grape whose name translates from Occitan as 'lip stinger' for its famously refreshing acidity. On the nose it's crisp and fragrant, with white grapefruit, fresh gooseberry, dried white blossom, and a cool saline edge from the vineyard's proximity to the Étang de Thau lagoon. The palate is taut and energetic, with lemon curd, green apple, crushed chalk, and a long, mineral-driven finish with mouth-watering, food-friendly acidity. Gérard Bertrand sources fruit for this wine from the Pinet hillsides overlooking the Mediterranean coast, where the Thau Lagoon's microclimate keeps natural acidity unusually high for southern France, and Picpoul de Pinet has been produced commercially since the 17th century as the go-to wine in Sète's oyster bars. Serve it well chilled now through 2027 with steamed mussels with shallots and white wine, where the wine's saline minerality and bright acidity are a textbook pairing, or try it with seacuterie and a lemon mignonette for a casual aperitif that never misses.

Sauvignon Blanc food pairings: steamed mussels, seacuterie, Edam and Fontina cheeses, salads.
