Domaine Gassier Lou Coucardié Blanc Costières de Nîmes is a breathtaking, medium-bodied white Rhône blend of Roussanne, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc that reads like a Châteauneuf-du-Pape at a fraction of the appellation's price, glowing warm gold in the glass and opening with a richly layered bouquet of ripe yellow plum, candied citrus peel, warm brioche, fresh spearmint, and a beguiling thread of toasted hazelnut. It is dry and exquisitely concentrated, with a silky, focused texture, seamlessly woven acidity, and a finish that seems to go on and on, reflecting ten months of careful lees aging in large-format 500-litre barrels. Winemaker Michel Gassier, whose fifth-generation family estate faces the wild marshes of the Camargue where Mediterranean sea breezes temper the southern Rhône heat, has made Domaine Gassier the first French vineyard to earn Regenerative certification from A Greener World, a landmark distinction in sustainable viticulture. The wine takes its evocative name from the Lou Coucardié, the celebrated champion bull of the Course Camarguaise, an ancient regional tradition where the bull is never harmed but rather the man who faces him frequently is, a fitting tribute to a wine with real presence and power. Cellar it for another year or two then enjoy through the mid-2030s, or serve it now at room temperature alongside a roasted free-range chicken with herbed cream sauce, where the wine's richness and aromatic complexity will find a beautiful partner, or with a pan-seared halibut in saffron beurre blanc for an elegant, special-occasion pairing.
