The Romanian variety Grasa is capable of producing dry and semi-sweet styles. A true gem, it's found only in Romania, and even there only approximately 450 hectares are planted. These are ripe, round wines with suggestions of walnut, almond and apricot. They are notably balanced and vibrant. This botrytis-affected wine will be ideal with nuts, dried fruit, or blue-veined cheeses. MINE: Grasa de Cotnari 2023 shows apricot-compote and candied-citrus peel with praline and nutty almond hints, its botrytis-driven sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Try it with toasted nuts or a blue-veined cheese. NEW: Fewer than 450 hectares of Grasa are planted anywhere in the world, nearly all of them around Cotnari in Romania's northeast. Apricot and orange marmalade carry a nutty, praline-like depth from noble rot. Botrytis sweetness stays balanced by real acidity throughout. Toasted hazelnut surfaces right at the end. Roasted chestnuts or a wedge of aged Stilton would be a decadent match. A grape this rare deserves more attention than a single Romanian region can give it, though Cotnari clearly isn't complaining.
