Amato Catarratto is a vivid, characterful Sicilian white from the family-run Cantine Amato, a winery with a quietly compelling story rooted in the Piraino hills of the province of Messina, where founder Rosario Amato established his cellar in 1958, inspired by his father-in-law Vincenzo Giardina Papa, who had returned to Sicily from America in the 1930s with a deep longing for the flavours of his homeland. Now in its third generation, the winery is led by winemaker Rosario Amato, grandson of the founder, who brings modern energy and an open mind to his work with Sicily's most widely planted native white grape, Catarratto, farmed on iron-rich clay soils and vinified exclusively in stainless steel to preserve the grape's natural purity and freshness. The wine carries under 13% alcohol, making it a particularly refreshing and food-friendly pour, best served well chilled. On the nose it is arrestingly aromatic, with pressed white peony, white clover, bergamot blossom and a delicate herbal lift that speaks to the grape's expressive varietal character. On the palate it is dry and light to medium-bodied, with a taut, saline-edged acidity, a pleasantly bitter citrus bite reminiscent of pomelo, and a crisp, long-lasting mineral finish that lingers with focus and precision. Serve it alongside grilled sea bass with lemon and capers, where the wine's salinity and floral freshness make a natural match, or pair it with a platter of fresh Sicilian seafood and a squeeze of lemon for an effortlessly sun-drenched table.

Catarratto food pairings: grilled sea bass with lemon and capers, Sicilian seafood platter with lemon, grilled halloumi with fresh herbs and lemon zest.
