Natalie's Review

Mouton Cadet Red 2023, Bordeaux, France: Pierre Ă–gren de Rothschild, great-grandson of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and a member of the family's youngest generation, lent his name to this Merlot-driven red as part of a trio of wines designed with his cousins Mathilde and Nathan to bring a more modern, easygoing spirit to the historic Mouton Cadet brand. The wine is made using low-temperature vinification, a technique chosen specifically to preserve freshness and fruit character, and it's organic and vegan-friendly. On the nose it carries crushed wild strawberry and a savoury herbal lift, while the palate is soft and juicy with tart redcurrant, ripe berry fruit, and a cooling minty finish that holds up well served lightly chilled. Baron Philippe de Rothschild founded Mouton Cadet in 1930 at just 28 years old, turning a glut of unsellable Bordeaux grapes during the Depression into one of the most recognized wine brands in the world, and this new generation is clearly intent on keeping that spirit of reinvention alive. Serve it lightly chilled with grilled vegetables, a charcuterie board, or a casual weeknight pasta. Drink: 2026-2028. 943 14.50% XD 750 mL  $17.80 Score: 90/100. May 25, 2019  Full Review

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
