Jon Steeves rated this wine as
91/100 with the following review:
Well balanced, integrated, medium plus body, red fruit, aged leather, savoury. Tasted 2012 vintage in May 2018, decanted 3h. Pairs well with tomato based traditional Italian dishes. 91 points
Courtney Flood rated this wine as
93/100 with the following review:
Very intense and savoury with tons of leather and spicy black peppercorn. But when sipped, still surprisingly very fresh with cherry, blackberry but with a background of pepper and rose. Very grippy tannins.
Colin McKone rated this wine as
90/100 with the following review:
Ruby in colour with a brick rim. It has mature aromas of leather, cassis, dried herbs and violets. It is medium bodied with balanced acidity and tannnins and flavours of cherry, plum, cassis and smoke. This will pair well with tomato based pasta dishes. Tasted on May 6, 2018.
Greg Hughes rated this wine as
94/100 with the following review:
A blend of 80% Nebbiolo and 20% Vespolina aged for two years in barrel. It saw some cellar tike before release too. These wines are pretty long-lived and sometimes need a bit of patience for them to enter their drinking window.
This is a great producer too. Sella is one of the more prominent producers across Biella's various gorwing areas. Their owner, Marco Rizzetti, has been a major driving force behind the recognition of this region for its history and quality.
The 2012 Lessona needs a bit of airtime to truly express itself, but it is phenomenal.
Pretty and bright ruby/garnet colour.
Wonderful aromas of currant, strawberry, balsam, clove, cinnamon stick, pomegranate, and some subtle truffle.
It is suave, medium to full bodied. Flavours of cherry, more pomegranate, licorice, subtle smoke, fresh and dried berries, and subtle suggestion of tea leaves.
Lessona's soil is not entirely volcanic, like its Biellese sibling, Bramaterra. The soils are part of a large gold-bearing moraine deposited there in the last ice age. It is mostly calcareous and provides Lessona a seductive softness not often seen with Nebbiolo.
These wines are rare - especially in North America. Let this serve as an alert to wine nerds and connoisseurs to snatch these up when you have the chance.
