13th Street’s 2016 Gamay Noir showcases their new modern-retro label but with that same delicious Gamay inside which Ontario wine lovers are becoming increasing focused on for its food friendly and refreshing characteristics. As Ontario is one of the top producers of world-class Gamay (second only to the French wine region Beaujolais where Gamay is king), they’ve got some great Gamay wines to choose from throughout the Niagara region and this value-priced offering from 13th Street is certainly a fan-favourite. The 2016 Gamay Noir shows dark berries, dark cherry, and pepper on the nose. The palate is juicy and fresh with tart dark fruit, tangy cherry, a hint of cherry cola, along with savoury smoked meat. 100% stainless steel fermented, so as to retain those fresh berry characteristics, the result is a rich and tangy wine that’s very versatile, whether it’s served slightly chilled on a patio in the summer with grilled sausages on a wood fired pizza, or enjoyed in the cooler seasons with Port and black cherry-braised lamb shank – each are fantastic pairings with this wine. Look for this wine in the October 14 Vintages release or buy winery direct. Tasted August 2017. 89+ points. Matt Steeves – www.quercusvino.ca

Here is what 13th Street does best in bring it with honesty style from their wide ranging stable of wines. The essence of Peninsula gamay is captured and with dusty, arid help from the dehydrated vintage. The fruit is ripe, dark and tangy, amalgamating blueberry, mulberry and black purple currants in just the right amount of sapid ways. This is the clean and clear gamay from 13th Street and winemaker J.P. Colas. Drink 2017-2020. Tasted October 2017.
Wineboy rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

A good example of Ontario Gamay with berries and a blend of tart black/red cherries. Even has a touch of earth to make it more complex. Some crisp acids make it a good candidate for fattier foods and a brief chilling before serving. Food diverse.
Jane Staples rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Crafted from low-yield vineyards which produces grapes with concentrated flavours.
Aged in stainless steel to optimize fruit flavours, this medium-bodied, dry gamay shows raspberry notes on nose and a fruit-forward palate. Enjoy with pork chops.

Lovely ripe, dark fruit on the nose and palate. A lovely example of a Niagara Gamay Noir. Well rounded mouthfeel and a perfect match to grilled sausages on game day.

13th Street Gamay Noir 2016, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada: So vibrant: this medium-bodied, supple Niagara red wine almost jumps out of the glass! Racy acidity with fleshy ripe layers of dark berries. No oak on this fresh Niagara Gamay Noir. Round and smooth. Perfect for veal and quail. Only 2000 cases were made for this vintage.
