Comparing this cellared 2005 next to a 2013 Merlot from the same winemaker was a treat. This wine showed a lot more earthy and herbaceous notes mingled with a more dried warm fruit characteristic. Tannins were soft and still had some structure. Definitely not past its prime, and very enjoyable with a hearty meal, maybe a herb crusted leg of lamb or beef bourgignon.

I loved this wine and on a price/quality ratio, it was probably my favourite wine of the tasting. This wine featured cherries, crushed plum, spice, cocoa, and herbs. A lovely offering that is ready to drink. 93 Points. (www.ottawawinejournal.com)

We tasted the 2005 Canoe Ridge Merlot to compare it with the 2013. It’s a more powerful Merlot with greater depth of flavour, fine-grained with concentrated black cherry and spice aromas and flavours, excellent structure, softer tannins and elegant finish.

This was the second Vintage of Canoe Ridge Merlot made by Head Winemaker Bob Bertheau. Interestingly I went back and looked at reviews from approximately five years ago. Many felt at that time the wine was at its prime. I am happy to report they were wrong!

Time has softened this Merlot and brought out complex tertiary aromas. Smoke, oak and vanilla with dark berry fruit. Medium body with smooth mouthfeel. Long finish with dusty tannins.
