A truly beautiful representation of the Haut Medoc, with a split between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. The inviting aromas of cigar, plum, dark cherry, leather and licorice with the same coming through on the palate - silky tannins that are oh so perfect - this wine is rich and elegant.

A Grand Cru Classé from the Haut-Médoc and of the 2010 noteworthy Bordeaux vintage. A bodacious, complex wine that should be decanted for an hour or two before serving. It is comprised of 50% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot.
I recommend that you pick up a bottle and try it for yourself. Available at the LCBO for $67.95 (in Ottawa only at Rideau and Bank Street locations).

Tasted on April 13th, 2007 in a Schott Zweisel glass.

The Château Belgrave is an excellent representation of the Haut-Médoc terroir with its half-and-half blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (with a soupçon of Petit Verdot for acidic structure). Combine this with a great 2010 vintage year and you have a wine worth cellaring at least 5, if not 10-15 years. Dark garnet colour. Complex aromas of cassis, plums, cocoa, liquorice, tobbaco, leather, and graphite. Bone dry. Rich and elegant mouthfeel. Balanced soft tannins. Decant before serving, Score 94. From out in the hinterlands of St-Julien (as Jancis R calls it) comes Chateau Belgrave. Located further inland than the more famous growths, it is way more accessible to the common folk (us) and at a fraction of their prices. The 2010 is rich, bold, elegant and very full-bodied. Ripe black cherry, plum, black berries, anise, cigar, spice and leather aromas and flavours roll and swirl about the satiny tannins - gorgeous.

This is Dourthe’s flagship brand and is classified as Grand Cru Classé. 2010 was an excellent vintage for Bordeaux. This blend is mostly made up of cabernet sauvignon, and is an excellent expression of the Haut-Médoc terroir, boasting licorice, cedar, black cherry. This vintage still has bold tannins that can be tamed with a bloody steak (sorry, vegetarians!) or a few more years in the cellar.

Dark ruby and a pinkish rim. A complex nose with dark cherry, cassis, licorice, herbs and some pepper. Juicy ripe cherries, back currants and plums are well balanced with smoky notes. Silky tannins are gracefully incorporated with perfect acidity. A lengthy finish pulls all the elements together nicely.

Try this wine with lamb shanks.

This is one of the most impressive wines from the holdings of Vignobles Dourthe. It's located just west of St. Julien, on the Left Bank. It is one of the best priced classified growths on the market, at just under $70ish dollars, in most places. Aclassified growth is a wine relegated into a growth category from the Napoleonic rating desognation for Bordeaux, from 1855. Belgrave is one of 18 wines considered a fifth growth.
This wine crushes. It's from the famous 2010 vintage, so it has a somewhat higher alcohol than it normally would. It's uber ripe.
The glass is stained garnet red, as youbswirl it.
Savoury herbs, stewed plum, black cherry, cassis, smoke, curry spices, and sanguinary.
Absolutely full flavoured and delicious. Perfect compliment of oak to it. Favours of cassis jam, smoke, plum sauce, blackberry, dark chocolate, melted licorice, and sundried tomato.
The wine reviewed was decanted by the host for a significant period of time (1 hour +). Expect it to be closed off and quite firm, upon initial opening. Put this alongside Bordelais style lamb cooked over grapevine tinder, or with stuffed mushroom cap appetizers.

Rich, full bodied Bordeaux with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon leading the way. Smaller amount of Petit Verdot added which enhances the complexity and overall experience. Generous amount of dark fruit aromas and flavours with smoke, eucalyptus and a hint of licorice coming through nicely. Smooth, refined tannins. Lovely now, but a few years in the cellar- and wow! Touted by winemaker Frederic Bonnafous as the "best expression of Chateaux Belgrave. Enjoy with lamb stew. Tasted April 2017

2010 Chateau Belgrave is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Bordeaux that's rich and concentrated with complex aromatic and flavour profiles. Rich dark fruits, plum, cassis, anise, graphite, and cedar on the nose and palate. Showing beautifully now, it will evolve further over the next 15 years. Enjoy with beef fennel stew.
