The nose offers ripe cherry, blackberry, spice, cedar and a hint of floral note. The palate brings out spicy black fruit with some cedar and mocha. The finish is long with some moderately soft tannins.

Chewy deep red with wild berry flavours (mulberry, blueberry, cherry); bitter cocoa and black pepper. This bold wine would be a little kinder with a couple years of aging, or a few hours of decanting.

Pair with: grilled meats in sweet BBQ sauce to match the boldness of the wine, but offset a little of the dryness. Smokey baked beans and molasses.

Washington state continues to impress with its offerings. While I think the stars of the state are Syrah and Riesling this Meritage is pretty tasty. On the nose a bit of plum jam and orange peel while in the mouth there was lots of non-descript black fruit and some white pepper with orange zest again. Heavy bodied with a long finish this wine still needs time to develop and may soften a bit if decanted twice. Pair with big bold meats and stews perhaps using the wine for the gravy will marry your meal nicely.

Presentation: Easy to read, there’s a softness to it
Appearance: Medium ruby red
Nose: Grass, caramel
Taste: Sour berries, tannic, leather
Finish: Strong tannins
Overall impression: This one needs time to mellow out. It’s a little one dimensional.

This Bordeaux blend consists of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Aromas are a bit tight at first, but there is some plum, red currant, and some cedar. Medium bodied, fruit is bright on the palate, medium + acid. Tannins are present but not overwhelming. Try with braised or roasted beef.
