Some may not know that Croatia is the origin of the iconic California Zinfandel grape varietal. Plavac Mali was once thought to to be iedentical to Zinfandel but is in fact a crossing of Zinfandel and another obscure native Croatian grape Dobricic. This Mali spent 24 months in large old Slavonian oak barrels and is medium garnet in colour. the wine is medium-bodied with characteristics of red fruit, leather, toffee, resin. The wine is tannic with racy acidity. Needs a couple of hours decanting prior to serving. Pair with grilled red meats. Drink now; not suitable for further aging.

Plavac Mali, a grape native to Croatia, is a fine example of the complex wines being produced there. The colour is a deep garnet, and the nose shows plum, dried fruit, oak, and earth. The palate is very dry with chalky tannins and command a protein rich dish to enjoy with. A wine built to be enjoyed with food. Tasted August 2015. 89 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca

Milos Vinifera Plavac Mali 2010, Peljesac Peninsula, Dalmatian Coast, Croatia: Peppery with black fruit aromas and a smooth, seductive, full-bodied texture. There's some rust flavours on this wine that to me indicates drink this year as it's turning the corner maturity-wise. Lots of acidity. A great Croatian red wine for BBQs and potluck gatherings. This robust red wine from the Croatian Dalmatian Coast is related to the Zinfandel grape according to vine genetic studies. Big, delicious and bursting with brambleberry, mulberry, and plums.
