SERESIN ESTATE
RESERVE CHARDONNAY 2013
NELSON, NEW ZEALAND
From the Winery:
At Seresin, we work the land in a traditional way to determine the character of our wines. Organic and biodynamic practices underpin our careful attention and the gentle thought with which we make wine of passion, grace and spirit.
The sentinel stone at the entrance to our Home Vineyard in Marlborough signals the path to both our winery and our philosophy. The stone bears a subtle handprint, a symbol of the individual and of creative endeavour; it represents our philosophy to work traditionally with natural elements and elicit a true Marlborough character in our wines and our extra virgin olive oils.
Vineyard:
The hand-picked fruit comes in equal amounts from our clay-rich hillside Raupo Creek vineyard and our Home vineyard which is made up of a variety of free draining Waimakariri soils.
Vinification:
The fruit was hand-sorted, whole-bunch pressed, then sent straight to barrel. Each parcel was naturally fermented in French oak, a proportion of which was new. The wine went through malolactic fermentation, which occurred naturally in barrel. During the tasting process barrels from different parcels were selected and designated reserve. After 11 months in oak the wine was blended and lightly filtered and bottled without fining Malolactic fermentation kicked off late spring/early summer as the barrels warmed up and once complete some ten months later the wine was wine was blended, filtered, and finished for bottling in March 2014.
My Tasting Notes:
I tasted the Seresin Reserve Chardonnay at a New Zealand Bubbly and Chardonnay promotion. The Bubbly and Chardonnay sparkling and Chardonnay wines were chosen by an astute panel of industry experts in New Zealand to help showcase the best of the best wines for each category.
There are two main islands that comprise New Zealand. The Seresin Chardonnay was tasted with four other south island producers and six producers from the north island. There are quite contrasting styles from each region making this a potpourri and flavourfest for lovers of Chardonnay.
This is a balanced wine with strong citrus notes in the bouquet and on the palate. There is a backbone of zestyness but it doesn’t overpower or overshadow the stone fruit and complimentary minerality. The wine finishes with a nice creamy, mouth filling texture that caresses your soul. This is one solid wine that Chardonnay lovers will go goo-goo, gaga over. The wine is good enough to drink on its own but best paired with a creamy, soft cheese and fresh baked baguette, extra butter. Drink now.
