Hans-Ulrich Hugel left his native Switzerland in 1639 to escape the Thirty Years' War and settled in Riquewihr, at the heart of the Alsace winegrowing region. For now 12 generations in a direct line, the Hugel family has worked tirelessly, facing many challenges to revive the reputation Alsacian wines once enjoyed during the 16th century. Perhaps the biggest one came in 1918 when after almost 50 years under German ruling, Alsace was restored to France with its viticulture in a pitiful state. Undeterred, the family persevered and established itself as a phenomenal world-renowned Alsacian wine producer. Emile Hugel, a pioneer, fought hard for Alsace to become the first wine region in France to link Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée to a grape variety.
Today, in the hands of the 12th generation and shortly to be joined by the 13th, the Hugel family’s goal is to ensure Alsace's presence in the world's finest white wine category.
The Hugel philosophy is simple: “the wine is already in the grape”.
This is a great classic Riesling that will gain in complexity for 8 years or more. It is produced from a selection of the finest plots of the Hugel estate in the heart of its Schoenenbourg Grand Cru. This fantastic historical terroir has been almost exclusively devoted to Riesling for centuries.
In the glass, it is a bright, light silvery yellow.
On the nose, it is alive, minerally and full of clover honey and white spring flowers.
The texture on the palate is oily and sensual. Notes of dried lemon peel, white honey and a little apricot surround a solid mineral and acidic core.
