Can the Douro Valley in Portugal produce other kinds of wine than Port?
Absolutely!
This Vila Regia (translates to Royal Village) Vinho Tinto is a delightful dry red wine at an incredible price!
SoGrape Vinhos started producing Vila Regia in 1989 in the northeast region of Portugal, along the Douro River Valley, one of the oldest demarcated wine regions of the world, made famous for the production of Port.
This is a blended wine that includes some of the same varietals utilised in Port production, such as Tinta Barocca and Tinto Roriz (aka Tempranillo)
This wine has a bright bluish jewelled ruby color.
On the nose, there are light aromas of vanilla and toasted coconut, a mix of strawberry and raspberry jelly and currants.
On the palate, it is dry, medium bodied, a little smoky and tobacco-y. There is an elegant balance between tannins & acidity and a lingering finish.
Believe it or not, I have served this wine with BBQ'd trout and a roasted red & yellow peppers, red onion & tomato couscous and it was amazing! Just goes to show that red wine can be paired with fish, the key is in the preparation of the fish!
Santé!

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
