The 2013 vintage of old vines (planted 1939) Chenas by Pascal Aufranc offers a well balanced Beaujolais differentiated by its new barrel oak presence which complements its appetizing acidity and juicy red fruit essence. This wine is deep ruby red and medium astringency with prominent notes of cigar box cedar on the palate and the nose with an acidic and tart mouthfeel. Enjoy this wine with chicken pad Thai, cedar plank salmon, or chicken cordon bleu. Domaine Pascal Aufranc has turned the berries from these 74 year old vines into an enjoyable aromatic experience and culinary companion. Highly recommend enjoying a few bottles of you can find it.
Jennifer Havers rated this wine as
87/100 with the following review:
Light and bright, this wine has aromas of tart cherry, cedar and smoke. More red fruit (cranberry) and pepper come through on the palate. Tannins are more present than expected, with nice acidity and a longer finish. Pair this with turkey and cranberries.
Martha Kelly AIWS reviewed this wine as follows:
This masculine Gamay wine has flavours of ripe strawberry and pomegranate with candied cherry and sweet vanilla and cinnamon and the firm tannins carry them through on the long finish.
Pair with pizza and pasta.
Drink now or keep until 2017 as the tannins soften.
Date tasted: November 2014.
Lynn van der Linde rated this wine as
88/100 with the following review:
Aromas of candied fruit and mint, and flavours of sour cherry. Structured tannins and acidity would pair well with pork tenderloin and chutneys.
Astrid Young rated this wine as
92/100 with the following review:
Nice fresh purple fruit on the nose, anise, heather and a hint of talc. Chewy tannins have an underlying grape-skin quality, with hints of sweet black berry fruit which turn a mostly cheery wine into something dark and brooding, even if only for a moment. An excellent aperitif wine, as it is light but bursting with flavor, and will surely delight almost anybody.
Douglas McMillan rated this wine as
88/100 with the following review:
Medium ruby, with sweet cherry, smoke, peppermint, and cedar. The flavour is sweet and tart cherry, blackberry, with an interestng chalkiness. Nice with pork or turkey, or an interesting wine on its own. Nice balance overall.
Heather Wall rated this wine as
87/100 with the following review:
Light and fruity with candy notes of strawberry, raspberry, sugar plums, candy floss, vanilla, cake spices. The palate exhibits more ripe fruit with black pepper, pomegranate, cedar. A lively and spirited wine with youthful tannins. Acidity is bright and body is light. A pretty and aromatic wine for the upcoming holiday season.
Perfect for Christmas turkey. Decant. Enjoy over the next 3 years.
