Zonte's Footstep Splitting Hares is a medium-bodied, vegan-friendly red that is exactly what it sounds like: two varieties at each other's throats in the best possible way, with the juicy, perfumed Grenache just taming the savoury chewiness of the Tempranillo, a balance the winemaker arrived at by adjusting the blend in 1% increments until it clicked. On the nose it's earthy and fragrant, with crushed blackcurrant, lavender, toasted hazelnut, and warm clove from aging in hogshead barrels. The palate is textured and rounded, with dark plum, thyme, and a long, juicy finish with dusty tannins. Winemaker Brad Ray, a Calgary-born architect-turned-winemaker who discovered wine working at the first privately owned wine shop in Canada, co-founded Zonte's Footstep in 2003, and the winery takes its name from fossilised Diprotodon footprints found on the property, belonging to the largest marsupial ever to walk the earth. Drink it now through 2029 with grilled lamb kebabs from the grill, or try it with veal cutlets where the wine's savoury texture and dark fruit rise to meet the dish.
