Yerevan 782 BC from Armenia opens with aromas of tart cranberry, black currant, toasted almond, and dried fig with hints of warm spice and earthy minerals. Dry and medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, it flows across the palate with bright red berry fruit and closes with a juicy, persistent finish. Serve it slightly below room temperature or cellar it through 2030. Grigor Aleksanyan, chief enologist who studied at the University of Montpelier and gained experience in Burgundy and Cognac, crafts this blend of indigenous Areni and Karmrahyut grapes under the guidance of consulting winemaker Jean-Baptiste Soula from Bordeaux, at the family-owned Armenia Wine Company founded in 2006 by the Vardanyan and Mkrtchyan families on vineyards planted at 1,000 to 1,500 meters elevation in the historic wine-producing city of Yerevan, established in 782 BC and home to the nearby Areni-1 cave winery discovered in 2007, which dates back to 4100 BC and is recognized as the world's oldest known winemaking facility. Pair this distinctive red with grilled lamb kebabs where the wine's bright fruit complements the charred, herb-rubbed meat, or enjoy it with spiced lentil and vegetable stew as the wine's earthy notes enhance the aromatic, cumin-laced flavors.

Food pairings: grilled meats, mature cheeses, rich vegetable and lentil stews.

Reviews and Ratings

From a family winery that began in 2006, this blend of the traditional Armenian grapes Areni and Karmrahyut offers lots to enjoy. Look for dark fruit, sweet ripe red fruit, raspberry, strawberry, nuts, dried fruit and spice and pair with braised beef or spiced veggie dishes. - Community Wine Reviews
