Yann Chave's Crozes-Hermitage Rouge is a certified organic, 100% Syrah from the Northern Rhone that delivers serious depth and character at an accessible address within this storied appellation. The nose is brooding and complex, weaving together black raspberry, smoked meat, graphite, and cracked black pepper, with a violet floral lift that adds elegance to the whole picture. On the palate it is full-bodied, bone dry, and impressively concentrated, with polished tannins, a stony mineral core, and a finish that crackles with savory spice. Serve it slightly below room temperature and cellar for another 6 to 8 years with confidence. Winemaker Yann Chave took over from his father Bernard in 1996, and after a personal poisoning incident from vineyard insecticides, he committed fully to organic viticulture in the early 2000s, earning certification by 2007, a turning point that transformed both the estate and his reputation. Today his wines are poured in the kitchens of some of France's greatest Michelin-starred restaurants, including those helmed by Bocuse, Ducasse, and Troisgros.

Food pairings: braised lamb shanks with rosemary and white beans, seared duck breast with cherry pan sauce, beef bourguignon with crusty bread.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
