Vaucher Père et Fils Chénas from Beaujolais A.O.C. is a charming, light-to-medium-bodied Gamay from the smallest and arguably most underrated of Beaujolais' ten crus, where the decomposed granite soils of the hillside vineyards produce wines of surprising depth and structure, aged here in concrete vats to preserve the natural purity and freshness of the fruit. It opens with a pretty, lifted nose of crushed raspberry, blood orange zest, and dried violet, with a mid-palate of juicy pomegranate and ripe black cherry underscored by a delicate thread of warm anise and earthy spice. The wine's naturally bright acidity keeps everything lively and focused through to a clean, persistent, fruit-driven finish. Serve it lightly chilled and enjoy it through 2030. Vaucher Père et Fils was founded by André Vaucher, born in Chambolle-Musigny, who was the French rowing champion in 1927 before turning his passion fully toward wine. Fascinatingly, the name Chénas itself derives from the ancient French oak forests that once blanketed these hillsides, and Gamay now grows where centuries of towering chênes once stood.

Food pairings: roasted chicken thighs with a Dijon and herb crust, seared duck breast with a pomegranate glaze, charcuterie with cornichons, aged comté and crusty baguette.
