Two Hands Charlie's Garden Shiraz from the Eden Valley, South Australia is a dry, full-bodied Shiraz of real elegance and precision, sourced from one of the highest vineyards atop Menglers Hill at 460 to 490 metres elevation, where the cool climate and schist-laced soils produce a wine that is effortlessly refined rather than boldly extracted, with a captivating nose of wild red plum, roasted black pepper, dried violets, bittersweet dark cherry skin, warm allspice and a thread of polished flint that runs through to a long, focused, mineral-driven finish with fine, savoury tannins. Chief Winemaker Richard, who joined Two Hands in 2019 as the reigning Barossa Winemaker of the Year, crafts the entire Garden Series with identical winemaking and maturation across all six regions, a deliberate approach that allows the unique character of each site to speak for itself with no interference from differing techniques. Founded in 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz with just $30,000 and 17 tonnes of fruit, Two Hands quickly earned legendary status when Robert Parker declared it "the finest negociant operation south of the equator" in 2004, and the winery subsequently appeared in Wine Spectator's annual Top 100 list for ten consecutive years. Serve it slightly below room temperature alongside a prime rib roast with a herb and garlic crust, where the wine's dark fruit intensity and mineral backbone rise beautifully to meet the richness of the beef; it is equally at home with a mushroom and leek risotto finished with aged parmesan, the wine's earthy depth and fine tannins weaving through every creamy bite. Cellar through 2032.

Shiraz food pairings: prime rib roast, leg of lamb, veal Porterhouse, mushroom and leek risotto.

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
