Tsimbidi Monemvasia Assyrtiko P.G.I. Laconia from the southern Peloponnese is a bone-dry, medium-bodied white with aromas of white grapefruit, crushed slate, and a cool saline breeze off the Laconian coast. On the palate it's taut and precise, with lemon curd, green apple, white peach, and a long, mineral-driven finish with bright, mouthwatering acidity. Yiorgos Tsimbidis, a former physicist who taught himself winemaking out of a deep love for his hometown of Monemvasia, founded this family winery in 1997 with his wife Elli to revive the medieval Malvasia wine that once made the region famous throughout the Mediterranean. After 12 years of research, experimentation, and lobbying, Monemvasia-Malvasia received its own PDO recognition in 2010, an achievement equivalent to writing a region back onto the wine map of Europe. The Tsimbidis daughters Marialena and Anastasia have since joined the winemaking team. Drink it now through 2027. Pour it alongside asparagus risotto, where the wine's saline minerality and bright acidity cut through the creaminess beautifully, or try it with tomato and basil bruschetta where the wine's citrus notes sharpen every bite.
