Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review:

This review was written for the 1500ml magnum format. Many excellent Nebbiolo wines are made in Piemonte, besides Barolo and Barbaresco. Gattinara is one of these. It is nestled in the Vercelli province, adjacent to Bramaterra in Biella. The Nebbiolos here are grown at higher elevations and on the soil of a volcano that turned itself inside-out ages ago. Wines here are concentrated, ageworthy, and aromatic.
The colour is a deep garnet, pale at the rim, but very dark at the core. A lot of oak was used on this (French oak, even).
The aromas are a striking combination of power and finesse. It his you with a ton of smoke, pomegranate, licorice, leather, strawberry, and bay.
It has a lot of minerality and this wine is quite young. It needs a while to breathe ( an hour, maybe), and then prepare for more concentrated herbalness. There are some red and black fruit too. Replays of smokiness and kitchen spices.
It's an amazing wine to get in a large bottle because it has incredible longevity. Tasting older examples of this one, it can be assured that in five to seven years it will be delicious and will remain that way for another ten, at least (if properly stored).
Pair this beauty with pork belly, or some mushroom risotto.
This is the magnum size of Travaglini's Gattinara (2012) produced from 100% Nebbiolo wine grapes from the Piedmont wine region. This robust red is aged in large oak foudres with 10% in French oak barrique. Pair with game dishes. - Community Wine Reviews
