The 2022 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colle Maggio is more savory than sweet, with a pleasantly earthy bouquet that mixes dusty earth and worn leather with wild strawberries and rose. Soothingly round and supple, it smooths over the palate with masses of ripe red and blue fruits, gaining a more tactile feel as grippy tannins mount toward the close. This finishes long, staining and structured, yet the tannins are sweet and soft in their contours. Drinking window: 2024-2029. (92 points Eric Guido,vinous.com,Sept. 26, 2024) MINE: Torre Zambra's Colle Maggio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Abruzzo is a robust, full-bodied red wine crafted from organically grown Montepulciano with notes of blackberry, espresso, licorice and dried sage. This dry, vegan-friendly wine displays firm, velvety tannins and impressive concentration that will soften beautifully over the next five years. Serve it at room temperature with grilled rib-eye steak as the wine's bold structure stands up to the marbled beef, or pair it with wild boar osso buco where the wine's intensity complements the rich braised meat. Winemaker Vincenzo Casamarte represents the fourth generation of his family tending vines on the south-facing Colle Maggio hillside, where abundant sunshine and cooling mountain breezes create ideal conditions for ripening Montepulciano grapes. The Torre Zambra estate has been committed to organic viticulture for decades, eschewing chemical interventions to produce wines that authentically express their Abruzzese terroir. This deeply concentrated Montepulciano represents exceptional value and will continue to evolve through 2030. NEW: Sunshine and mountain breezes give Montepulciano real intensity on the Colle Maggio hillside that Torre Zambra farms in Abruzzo. Black plum and wild blackberry carry a savoury, earthy weight. The tannin is firm enough that a few years in the cellar wouldn't hurt. Dark chocolate emerges as the wine sits in the glass. A rack of lamb or grilled game sausages would be a genuinely great match. Abruzzo rarely gets top billing next to Tuscany, but bottles like this one make the case that it should.

Montepulciano D'abruzzo food pairings: steaks from the grill, lamb chop cassoulet, grilled game sausages.
