From Casal De Loivos, Tom De Baton 2017 is a great value Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca red blend under $17 from the Douro wine region. Bright ruby in the glass, it is perfumed with spiced ripe dark fruits, with good acidity for food and structured tannins. Good now, but would benefit from one more year in cellar to marry and mature. Try in 2022. The wine is so named for the baton that is used to stir the lees of the wine during fermentation.

Food pairings: meaty stews, grilled steaks, pork chops smothered in a wild mushroom sauce.
