San Pedro 1865 Selected Vineyards Las Lagunas Carmenère from the Lolol zone in the Colchagua Valley, Chile is a dry, medium-bodied Carmenère of genuine character and freshness, with a vivid, fragrant nose of crushed blackcurrant, dried bay leaf, warm black cardamom, toasted cedar and a pleasing thread of green olive tapenade that speaks authentically to the variety's signature herbaceous soul, all leading to a juicy, fruit-driven palate with smooth, polished tannins and a clean mineral finish. Winemaker Andrea Calderón Vásquez is in charge of the 1865 portfolio today and brings a benchmark-level precision to this wine, which spends twelve months in barrel with just 15% new oak to add gentle spice and texture without obscuring the lively, fruit-forward character that makes this Colchagua Carmenère so appealing. Viña San Pedro itself is one of Chile's oldest and most storied estates, founded in 1865 by the Correa brothers who were pioneers in bringing Old World grape varieties to the Curico Valley, and the winery today exports to more than 80 countries worldwide, a testament to its enduring quality and reach. The Lolol zone benefits from Pacific breezes that temper the summer heat and contribute to the wine's wonderful freshness and lifted aromatics. Serve it slightly below room temperature alongside a slow-braised rabbit stew with tomatoes and herbs, where the wine's earthy, savory depth is a natural partner; it is equally rewarding with a venison steak grilled over wood, the wine's firm backbone and dark fruit rising to meet the gamey richness with ease. Cellar through 2031.

Carmenère food pairings: venison, ratatouille, rabbit stew, bison steaks.
