Quinta do Espírito Santo from the Lisboa region of Portugal is a vegan-friendly, full-bodied red blend of Tinta Roriz and Castelão, aged in a combination of Portuguese and American oak vats, that delivers remarkable character and generosity for its modest price. Deeply coloured in the glass, it draws you in with a nose of sun-dried plum, wild bramble and a ribbon of espresso, giving way on the palate to flavours of dark cocoa, roasted fig and a whisper of anise, all lifted by a firm thread of acidity that keeps the finish focused and long. It is bone dry with structured, chewy tannins, best served just below room temperature, and will drink well through 2028. This wine earned Grand Gold at the prestigious Citadelles du Vin competition, a remarkable achievement that underscores just how much quality is packed into this bottle, and the current winemaker at Quinta do Espírito Santo continues to craft a wine that consistently punches well above its weight in the competitive Lisboa appellation. Serve it alongside a slow-roasted pork shoulder with smoked paprika and garlic, where the wine's dark fruit and cocoa depth will wrap around the meat's richness like a warm embrace, or pour it with a thick, juicy burger topped with caramelized onions and aged cheddar, letting its grippy tannins and savoury finish cut through every indulgent bite.

Food pairings: roast pork, burgers, ribs.
