Planeta La Segreta Grillo Sicilia D.O.C. from Menfi in western Sicily is a medium-light 100% Grillo grown on certified organic estate vineyards and fermented in stainless steel at low temperature to lock in freshness and aromatics, and at this price it's one of the more persuasive arguments for keeping a case of Sicilian white in the fridge at all times. On the nose it's bright and fragrant, with white grapefruit, dried chamomile, crushed chalk, and a cool sea breeze from the Mediterranean. The palate is crisp and juicy, with lemon curd, green apple, a whisper of fresh fennel, and a long, saline mineral finish with lively, food-friendly acidity. Winemaker Alessio Planeta, named Wine Enthusiast's Winemaker of the Year in 2023, oversees production across six distinct estates in five regions of Sicily, and Diego Planeta first planted vines at the family's Ulmo estate in 1985, with the La Segreta name coming from a hidden woodland grove along a nature trail on the property. Serve it well chilled now through 2027 with fish tacos with a lime slaw, where the wine's zesty character ties the dish together, or try it with a seafood salad where its bright acidity lifts every bite.

Grillo food pairings: seafood salad, fish tacos, pan-fried panfish.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
