Monsaraz from Alentejo D.O.C. is a full-bodied, bone-dry red blend of 50% Alicante Bouschet, 30% Touriga Nacional, and 20% Trincadeira, opening with aromas of crushed blackberry, iron-rich earth, dried violets, and a thread of toasted oak. On the palate it's opulent and structured, with dark cherry, bitter espresso, ripe black plum, and a long finish of warm clove and graphite backed by firm, grippy tannins. Winemaker Rui Veladas crafts this wine at Carmim, a cooperative founded in 1971 in Reguengos de Monsaraz that has grown to 850 members farming over 8,600 acres across Alentejo. An earlier vintage of this same wine, the 2017, was named Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020, scoring 97 points and standing as the only Alentejo wine to receive that distinction that year. The wine ages in both French and American oak for 12 months before bottling. Cellar it through 2029, or open it now and let it breathe. It's a natural match for a venison stew with root vegetables, where the wine's dark fruit and firm tannins hold their own against the gaminess, or pour it with a tourtière and the pastry's buttery richness will soften the wine's edges beautifully.
