Reviews and Ratings

Mymi Thesingingsommelier - Sommelier, FWS rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

The roots of the Torres family in the Penedès region of North-Eastern Spain can be traced back to the 17th century. Documents show that even in those days the ancestors of the Torres family were vintners and sold their wines on a small scale. The family tradition has been scrupulously respected down through the centuries and the company has been passed down from father to son. Today, it is run by President Miguel A. Torres, a fourth generation member of the family – with the fifth generation also represented in the company.
Bodegas Torres owns a range of vineyards as well as wineries in Spain’s various Denominations of Origin regions as well as in Chile’s Valle Central and California’s Russian River Valley.
Their philosophy of winegrowing begins with respect for the land. The family completely avoids the use of chemical treatments, replacing them with biological alternatives, following the viticulture traditions of Torres’ ancestors and has committed itself to reducing CO2 emissions by 30% per bottle by the year 2020.
Mas La Plana is a very small vineyard in the Penedes DO where only the most select Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown. These are used to make a strictly limited quantities of Torres’ most prestigious red wine also named “Mas La Plana”, now known to connoisseurs all over the world. In the Paris Wine Olympiad, the 1970 vintage triumphed over some of the most famous wines in the world, including a Chateau Latour.
And this 2010 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is fantastic!
In the glass, it is a deep ruby garnet colour and is starting to show a little age with some terracotta hues. Multitude of legs!
On the nose, there is some earth, dark coffee, various ripe red berries, black pepper and spice.
On the palate, it is generous, deep and full. The tannins are prominent and supported by a lively acidity. The berries are represented but have more of a jammy texture. Very long finish with pepper and tobacco notes.
A gentleman with a strong handshake!
A wine to savour with various roasted meats, anything from veal to goose or BBQ lamb and potatoes…
