Michalakis Assyrtiko P.G.I. Crete is a bone-dry, medium-light white from the island's elevated interior, where the family's estate vineyards sit at 550 metres above sea level on the former lands of a 14th-century monastery. On the nose it's precise and bright, with white grapefruit, fresh gooseberry, crushed limestone, and a cool saline edge from the Aegean breezes. On the palate it's taut and energetic, with lemon curd, green pear, a thread of dried herb, and a long, mineral-driven finish with bracing acidity. The Michalakis family has been making wine in Crete since 1962 and today runs the largest privately owned winery on the island, farming 45 hectares of estate vineyards. The estate sits in the same valley as the ancient wine-press of Vathypetro, dated to around 2,500 BCE and still standing, a reminder that Crete's winemaking story is one of the oldest on earth. Drink it now through 2027. Pour it alongside pan-fried panfish with lemon and capers, where the wine's citrus and mineral edge are a natural partner, or try it with grilled chicken dishes and fresh herbs where the wine's brightness ties the whole plate together.
