Luckett Vineyards' Phone Box Red is a boldly characterful, full-bodied blend of cold-hardy Nova Scotia varieties including Castel, Lucie Kuhlmann, Marquette, Léon Millot, and Maréchal Foch, all grown in the Gaspereau Valley where Bay of Fundy breezes and tidal-influenced soils shape wines unlike anything else in Canada. Aged 14 months in Hungarian and American oak, the wine opens with generous aromas of dark preserved fruit, smoked meat, dried herbs, and a ribbon of vanilla and toasted cedar that give it real savory depth. It's dry and richly textured, with firm but yielding tannins and a long, warming finish. Best enjoyed at room temperature, it will continue to evolve through 2032. Executive winemaker Mike Mainguy, who trained in Niagara before bringing his craft to Nova Scotia, has led the winemaking program here since the winery opened in 2011, and this is arguably his signature achievement. British-born founder Pete Luckett planted a working red phone box right in the middle of the vineyard as a nod to his roots, and visitors can still make a free call to anywhere in North America from the vines.

Food pairings: slow-cooked beef and root vegetable stew, pork ribs with smoky barbecue glaze, aged cheddar with pickled onions and grainy mustard.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
