La Maldita Grenache Rioja D.O.Ca. is a medium-bodied, extra-dry red from old Garnacha vines over 40 years of age, grown at high altitude in Tudelilla in Rioja Baja and in the vineyards of Villamediana and Alberite in Central Rioja. The wine is fresh and nimble, with ripe strawberry, wild cherry, and a soft, velvety texture, with 30% of the blend aged briefly in barrel and the rest rested on the lees in tank to preserve its bright fruit character. Serve it slightly below room temperature and drink it through 2028. The name La Maldita, meaning "the cursed one," is a nod to what local vine growers have long called Garnacha in Rioja, a grape whose thin skin and low yields made it so difficult to farm that it fell from favour and now accounts for less than 10% of all vineyard plantings in the region, down from roughly half a century ago. The brand was created by one of Rioja's oldest winemaking families with the express goal of bringing Garnacha back to the spotlight it once held.
