Reviews and Ratings

Vera Czerny rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Monastrell is cultivated in Jumilla for centuries. Juan Gil grapes came from 40 yrs old vineyards, at 700 m above sea level. Poor soil, low rainfalls and extreme changes of temperatures means stress for vine. Therefore low yielded Monastrell grows into small berries, very aromatic and concentrated in flavor. Secret that makes this wine irresistible: old vine Monastrell, that doesn't make the cut into strictly high standards of El Nido and Clio (their flagship collectibles) ends up under this label.
Deep ruby red, beautiful aroma of dark berries and plums. This wine needs to breathe a little - it will reward you with stronger flavors and aromas. Give it at least 15 min. Full body, greatly balanced fruity wine has velvety, almost none existent tannins. Well balanced, with levels of rich dark fruit flavors. Like the fruit was whipped to cover every inch of your mouth. Long finish, great value!

Dan Trcka Wine Blogger rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

The 2007 Juan Gil Silver Label, which is made of 100% Monastrell aged in French oak for 12 months, has a medium body that is FRUITY to integrated and has inviting aromas of prune, caramel, cut hay and some coconut smoothness. Tannins are refined (decant for 15 to 30 min) and the finish is medium and a bit chalky. Surprisingly, this wine has 15% alcohol, which I would have not guessed, as the flavour intensity, acidity and tannins are nicely balanced. It can be enjoyed now, though would benefit from cellaring for couple of years and can be easily aged for another 10+ years. My impression: NICE to BEAUTIFUL, 89 pts - a recommended buy. Tasted Nov/10.
