It's been quite sometime since I have enjoyed a full bodied Australian wine. I have been busily making my way around the world tasting wines that I simply never would have thought I'd have tasted and quite often with incredible results! So I felt a little like I had turned my back on South Australian wines, and hence set about re introducing my taste buds to old faithful!
I'll be honest, it was quite a shock at first, the wine seemed more harsh than I had remembered. But I knew that I had gone about this the wrong way. I had opened this wine and only let it decant for about half an hour, it very quickly became clear to me that this wine needed at least 2 hours to allow it to breath and embrace its complexities.
I enjoyed a nice evening meal, with a different wine, and then I poured my glass of Hardys. Not to be confused with Harvey's, a British sherry, Hardys is a wine to be taken seriously. This is not a mid afternoon sipping wine. This wine is best with a fully flavored evening meal, or even at the very end of the evening when your taste buds have been brought to full capacity, Hardys can stand up to the challenge!
On the nose, there is quite a light note of flavours. Lots of berries, cherries, raspberries, black currants, black berries, Pomegranite slight nutmeg and floral notes of apple blossom.
On the palate the wine steps forward. Tart cherries, black berries, juniper berries, bitter orange peel then notes of leather and cigar box intertwine before releasing notes of espresso and dark chocolate. Herbal tones of nutmeg and rosemary step forward and the wrap up with black pepper. There is a slight chalkiness on the palate before a medium length tannin.
At $17.00 this wine is a perfect companion for the end of the evening!
