From Ferraton Père & Fils, La Matinière 2018 is a savoury and full-bodied 100% Syrah, fragrant with bright cherry, crushed raspberry, plum, savoury herbs, pepper spice vibrant, full and smooth on the palate. Tannins are pleasantly grippy. This is a beautiful Crozes-Hermitage, Rhône red, elegant and in perfect harmony throughout. Most of the wine was aged in concrete tanks with 15% in new and neutral oak barrels. La Matinière translates to “early bird” and is in reference to Colette Ferraton, wife of winemaker, Michel Ferraton. Good now, better in 2023. Decant one hour prior to pouring it with a juicy prime rib roast.

Food pairings: grilled skirt steak, lamb roast, meat-lover's pizza.

Reviews and Ratings

L.J. Palmer WSET 3 rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

The wine is deep ruby, dry, medium acidity at most, smooth and silky tannin and a pronounce aroma of dark fruit (primarily cherry), black pepper, savoury herbs like rosemary and thyme, black olive, a nice meaty and savoury note and black licorice.Heaven in the mouth! Paired wonderfully with foccacia studded with rosemary sprigs, roasted garlic and red peppers, and good olive oil and lamb koftas drizzled with rosemary infused olive oil. Iberico cheese with rosemary crusted rind was wonderful too. Wonderful on it's own too. Madagascar 65% dark chocolate from Stubbe was the best dark chocolate with it (tasted 4 other single origin chocolates). Purchased in 2022 and tasted October 2025; well worth the wait and the enhanced flavour from extra age in bottle.
