The Villa Wolf Pinot Noir from Pfalz Qualitätswein is a sustainably farmed, medium-bodied red fermented with natural yeasts and aged twelve months in seasoned oak casks, offering an alluring nose of crushed red cherry, dried cranberry and a dusting of warm clove, while the palate delivers bright flavors of tart wild strawberry, forest floor and a gentle curl of wood smoke, all tied together by firm yet graceful acidity and silky, fine-grained tannins. It is dry and refreshing with a clean, lingering finish, so serve it lightly chilled and enjoy now through 2032. Winemakers Patrick Mollendorf and Sumi Gebauer, who both honed their craft at the legendary Dr. Loosen estate before taking the reins at Villa Wolf in 2011, bring a minimalist, terroir-driven philosophy to the cellar that lets the sunny warmth of the Pfalz speak clearly in every glass. The estate itself was founded in 1756 as the J.L. Wolf estate and enjoyed a glamorous renaissance when an Italianate villa was constructed on the grounds in 1843, before the legendary Ernst Loosen stepped in to rescue the languishing property in 1996 and transform it into one of Germany's most admired Pinot Noir producers, earning Loosen the title of Decanter Man of the Year in 2005. Pour it alongside roast chicken with herb butter and roasted root vegetables, where the wine's bright acidity and earthy depth complement the savory richness of the dish, or try it with lamb cutlets rubbed in rosemary and garlic, where the wine's red fruit and gentle tannins are a natural, elegant match.

Pinot Noir food pairings: lamb cutlets, veal ribs, roast chicken.
