Reviews and Ratings

Alex & Priya - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 95/100 with the following review:

PRIYA: Looking at this wine makes me think of wheat fields in late summer, of honey, sunflowers and the sun just before sunset. Gorgeous!
ALEX: Deep gold colour looks exactly as it is—incredibly rich! Nose is beautiful. Smokey, spicy with hints of cinnamon and cardamom and an undercurrent of white mushrooms, glazed over honeyed apricots, strawberries and marmalade. At the end of it, there’s a major impression of stony minerality that subdues the noes from time to time.
PRIYA: Wow, sounds like you’re describing an Indian sweet with the ‘cinnamon and cardamom’! I’m afraid I don’t get all those notes you mention, as I’m overwhelmed by the strong smell of cloying, cooked honey and orange marmalade. It smells too sweet for me…and it is. Very sweet, like an icewine, with a strange, bitter aftertaste.
ALEX: Yes sir it smells sweet, and it is, and there’s a good deal of botrytis aroma as well, but that’s not the half of what’s there; which is why the wine is special. But the extras aren’t that easy to discern, making this a connoisseurs wine. More casual drinkers will have difficulty separating this from a $20 Alsatian Pinot Gris; to them this is a waste of money.
PRIYA: You’re on the nose there Alex! I nearly choked when I found out it was $95! I’m amazed by all the layers you can unearth in this bottle, but this casual drinker would prefer to put that money into a spa day.
ALEX: You deserve a spa day my lady! At $95 it sure is steep but for the best of this grape, it’s not unreasonable. The palate is luscious and velvety in the mouth, powerful in the middle and everlasting in length. I love the spicy, bitter finish you mentioned, which leaves a mineral coating over the teeth. This has more acidity than I’ve ever experienced in a pinot gris, keeping this juggernaut fresh!
