Contino Gran Reserva 2019 Wine Review

Contino was Rioja's first single-vineyard wine, founded in 1973 as a joint venture between CVNE and the Pérez Villota family on an estate tucked into a bend of the Ebro River near Laserna. This Gran Reserva, built mostly from Tempranillo with smaller shares of Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha from the best parcels, leans toward dried fig, a faint cigar-box quality, and a sandalwood-like spice, with dark cocoa hiding underneath. The texture is generous and rounded, with grip that eases back the more time you give it to breathe. Drink it now through 2044, a Rioja that more than earns the patience it asks for.

Food pairings: braised lamb shanks, roast game, aged hard cheese.
